11/23/05 - Wednesday of Destruction

::True Story:: ( Edit - no really guys, this REALLY happened, come to my house and i'll show you the street!! the telephone poles are still black, and the oil truck is still there!! )

So I'm minding my own business~ sitting in my room trying to beat the campaign for AoM and then BOOM!!!! I pause the game and look to my right. Now my house is one of those two story houses, not really american style, but not really full korean either. But anyways, my window used to look out onto my street~ but RECENT construstion --;; has blocked my window *sigh*, so all you see out of it is darkness. Well they're still doing construction on the villa next to my house when I heard this LOUD boom, so LOUD my windows rattled. So I'm sitting there thinking the bastards dropped something heavy against our house, the villa they're building is three stories, and there is a this nice tiny-alley-way gap, between my house and the villa. So I look to my right, at my closed window, to see if I see the shadow of any workers or anything. Confident there is nothing wrong with my window, I go back to playing AoM (Age of Mythology btw.. great game you should try it) And then.. BOOM, Just as loud, Now my mom is in my room, and we both conclude that they're just doing contruction and they must be doing something with heavy stuff o.o;; and a couple more BOOMs follow.. before I smell the smoke - before we get phone calls from the neighbors...

I run outside to see a darkened sky at 2:00pm - A choking sky that forces me to cover my mouth with the collar of my jacket (my nice new brown jacket btw~ sexah) I walk across my yard and onto the street... The street, filled with people - filled with smoke, and a firetruck parked in front of my house. I look to my right to see a thick cloud of smoke rise out from the building across and down the street a bit from my house. My street isn't a large two laned street, rather its one of those small streets, where you can fit one car at the side for parking, and another car can drive down the street. I try to see which building exactly the smoke is coming from, but the another firetruck is blocking my view. I look to my left - korean people, young and old are gathered on the street - looking at the smoke. I see that its nearly impossible - and very dangerous to closer to the source of the smoke so I decide to go AROUND the block. So I head left, turn the corner, and another left, I see people running towards a house on this side of the block. This house had a large stone stairwell that heads up to the roof, and many people were peering down from it to the smoke. Seeing it as a great way to find out whats going on, I walk up the steps, and look down, at the burning bathhouse. This was Hyundai Bathhouse - the well known place I tell taxi drivers so they can take me home. The side of it was billowing black smoke - mixed with some white smoke (racial equality), but the roof was pretty crowded too, and I couldn't make out what was going on. So I headed back down, and continued around the block. Happy Mart, a pretty big super market, is in darkness - there seems to be no electricity in the building, and many people are outside its steps talking, I press on to see a group of people standing around a old korean lady who seems to have fainted. I get to the corner and turn it, only to find another firetruck. What is going on? I walk down the street along the firetruck, noticing the english lion symbol on the truck, and pop out to the far end of the block my house is on. The first thing that catches my eye is the blackened building next to the bathhouse. This building was pouring  thick smoke out into the sky. The next thing I noticed was a car.. or what used to be a car. The entire car was black or a strange dark orange, the tires.. melted, the windows - gone. It looked like someone had just bombed the car. Now for those of you in my class, remember the bowling trips we took in PE? well this is that place - remember the small parking area? This is where I was standing, cept there weren't many cars, just lots of people. All staring at the burning building before our eyes. I slowly walk towards the other side of the lot, noticing a taxi, half chared, its rear tires melted. And a small tico, next to a korean pick up truck, both totally ruined, burned to the frame. These cars weren't in the small lot, they were along the street, and the truck was IN the middle of the street. Firefighters were all around, several hoses were spraying water on the builings. I saw a few people taking pictures with their cellphones, and after the initial shock, I did the same (will post later <_<;; ) All four cars were still smoking, and I wondered if it was dangerous to be in this area - what if there was still fuel left in these cars? I hurried back around the block to my house, but this time the firetruck had moved a bit and I was able to walk down the street, onto the small open lot of the restraunt next to the villa. From here I could see that the side of the bathhouse was black and spouting smoke, but the rest of the building seemed ok.. except for the broken windows, burnt walls and melted signs. One thing I forgot to mention, many of the signs had melted.. the front of them were just gone!, or hanging is a big melted glob from the frame. I walked down the lots - because the next building over on my side of the street was a car center, two in fact. Many people were standing around, talking, crying. I saw more cars, burnt to the frame, and the street was covered in black - almost like oil.. Oil.. there was a korean oil truck next to the side of the bathhouse, and it was burned also. Did that explode? Is that what caused the fires?? I counted a total of about 8 cars that were destroyed, and 3 more were badly burned. It seems that the oil truck was pumping kerosene into the boiler of a house in the basement. But the oil was leaking, no one noticed, until oil had run down the street, and then it exploded. I still don't know all the details, but it seems to be huge explosions... cars on the far side of the street have the colored glass of their lights melted, and telephone poles are completely black, with lots of the cables melting. After standing around a bit, a few military people from the base came, talked to the firefighters and police, a couple of ambulences came too, but I didnt' see anyone get carried away. I heard that a baby died, and I can't imagine what happened to all those people in the buildings..

I came back home with the beckoning of my mother, who had called my cell. As I left, police were putting that famous yellow tape around a whole section of the street. I came home and tried to see if there was anything in the news, but I had no cable.

I wonder if my street will ever be the same...
